While the Pelican 20QT Elite didn’t outperform any of the other coolers I tested in durability, capacity, or insulation, it’s definitely the easiest to carry longer distances. If I had to carry my cooler 100 or more yards every time I used it, I’d probably pick the Pelican 20QT Elite.

The Igloo BMX 25 cooler is the most budget friendly cooler I’ve tested in the 20-25 quart category. It performed the worst (out of four brands) in my insulation and ice-retention tests, but not by very much. The best performing was the YETI Roadie 24, but that only outperformed the Igloo by 5 hours (about 8% better). The Igloo is much less expensive than YETI, too. Otherwise, the Igloo is ugly, but it gets the job done.

This ugly little beast is the best budget backpack cooler I tested. It held more cans and was better at insulating compared to the Tourit. The Igloo MaxCold Voyager has a great price, though I’d bet you’ll be looking for a new backpack cooler in three or four years, as it’s not the most durable.

The RTIC 20-Can Backpack Cooler gets the job done and the price is right, but for a similar price, there are better options. The zipper is difficult to open and the insulation ability lags behind the Icemule Pro, which is similarly priced.
